The Concept of Jaggas!

Isn’t sometimes the drastically vast cultural heritage of our country simply leave you amazed?

I recently came across an instagram post stating the cultural importance of keeping a “shagun ka 1 rupee” along with the gift money. According to the post, it is given with the intention of reconnecting with the acquaintance in the future to pay back the debt of that one rupee. As a result, the meeting cycle continues. The idea seems incredible, doesn't it?

Such ideas and customs are numerous, and they are deeply ingrained in our nation.  I personally don’t believe any other country on the world map would be this culturally pure and rich. (If you think differently, please enlighten me about it in the comments below, would love to know your views!)

Here, I would take this moment to introduce you to one more tradition of our country, “the concept of Jaggas”. Now, who are Jaggas? And what do they do?

Jaggas is a group of people who work as genealogists of primarily Rajputs. Now, these genealogists do not research and maintain a record of family histories using technology or computers; instead, they do so manually. Mentioning the records in a large-size booklet. Next, what might continue to amaze you is learning that they have preserved those booklets in their original writings for centuries.

The idea that you could actually trace your forefathers' information, for instance, the properties they used to own thousands of years ago, could simply leave one astonished!

These are just a tint of what could be a whole pool of traditions waiting for you and I, to dive into them. I simply love learning about the different cultures and traditions, distinct by boundaries. If you know more about such existing traditions and culture or if you identify with any, do enlighten me about them in the comment section.

Jhabua, nestled in the heart of Madhya Pradesh, is a region that embodies the spirit of simplicity, warmth, and resilience. Having visited this beautiful district twice, I’ve come to cherish the connections I’ve built with its people, the Bhil community. Their hospitality, rich culture, and profound knowledge of the land never cease to amaze me. Every visit leaves me with new learnings and a deeper appreciation for their way of life. One of the highlights of my trips has always been staying with the tribal Bhil families in rural Jhabua. There is something uniquely grounding about living amidst nature, surrounded by people who live in harmony with their environment. Their food, for instance, is a testament to their simplicity and love. The large makka ki roti, made from locally grown maize and served with affection, is a meal that warms both the heart and the soul. The taste is enhanced not just by its freshness but by the genuine hospitality that accompanies it. These experiences, acco...
